Kyle
is fifteen years old and has always been homeschooled, having
asked his mother to be his teacher when he was two and a half
years of age. He saw her teaching children after school and
thought it looked like fun. He called it "homeschooling"
from the beginning, introducing his mother to the concept!
Says Janette, "From the start, Dan encouraged us to stay
at home to learn, pointing out all the flexibility and opportunities."
Kyle's interest in music has been fostered by his parents,
especially Dan, since infancy. After seeing a fiddle contest
in Winfield, Kansas when he was seven-years old, Kyle declared
he was going to play the fiddle, and wanted one for Christmas.
He received his first fiddle that year, and began to take
private lessons in January along with his mother at Swallow
Hill Music School, in Denver. He took lessons from Johnny
Neill for three years, and studied with Anders and Ian Hyde.
He then took Suzuki Violin lessons for a year, and was recently
taught by two-time National Fiddle champion, Katie Glassman.
He now learns from fiddle players along our journeys, and
enjoys learning from Byron Berline, Jim Garling and Chris
Thile tapes.
Kyle was awarded a full scholarship
in October, 2004 for the 2005 Steve Kaufman mandolin kamp.
Kyle has attended several music festivals, ("I love the
one in Ainsworth, Nebraska the best,") concerts, fiddle
contests, bluegrass festivals, and has listened to a variety
of country, bluegrass, folk, blues, rockabilly, and early
rock & roll music all his life. "I really like rockabilly,
people like Buddy Holly, Ricky Nelson, Carl Perkins, and Elvis.
Although I never got to meet Ronnie Dawson, I was able to
talk with him over the telephone before he died. I think Gene
Vincent is really cool, too." Kyle spent a week in January
2004 with Master fiddle teachers- Dick and Lisa Barrett in
Raplje, Montana learning several new fiddle tunes, and playing
them in our sets. He attended the 2005 Steve Kaufman Kamp
with a scholarship, and especially enjoyed learning from Don
Sternberg.
Kyle first began to sing with Dan, songs
like Hank Williams "Why Don't You Love Me"
and "Hey Good Lookin". Like his dad, Kyle
is a big baseball fan. He played Little League, usually at
the catcher position when he was ten, eleven and twelve. During
the summer months each year Kyle has gone to most Rockies'
games with his dad. Kyle enjoys the game. He has been the
batboy for Spring Training in Arizona for three years, and
plans to be there again in March of 2006. After the game Dan
relaxes while Kyle and his sister busker with their fiddles
outside the park. The fans leaving the park are treated to
some hot fiddle music.
Kyle has played in numerous fiddle contests,
band scrambles, retirement communities, schools, and coffee
shops. He has been invited to play with several established
musical groups including Dakota Blonde, and Runaway Express
and most recently the Daughters of the Purple Sage. One summer
Kyle was called up to do a few songs with Timothy P. and Rural
Route Three at Red Rocks amphitheater. In addition to fiddle,
Kyle plays acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and started
to play the Dobro. Kyle's first CD is available and titled,
Kyle's Big Hit.
